Journal Entry 1: 09/22/2024 As I had my first walk through the woods, I have thought about the indigenous people. I have always thought of the woods to just be a habitat with trees and dirt. I have never thought about the historical context or civilians that used to strive in the woods. As my professor shows us an edible source the Natives' used to eat, it made me think, "what else have the Native American's ate in this forest to survive?" Every bush and tree I've walked past I'd look at it with mere curiosity, wondering if the Native Americans used this natural green as a source to survive. There was a specific sap smeared across a fallen log, not only have the Native Americans found source of food in the woods, but a source of natural medication. I've began to look around and see what invisible natural medication could have also been used. As an individual that comes from an ethnic group where natural medication is vital, I was quite intrigued. As I continue to walk through the woods, I begin to feel empathy and sorrow for the indigenous people and remember their story. Although the woods are catered to every individual, I find it too important to not forget the history of the Native Americans.
